2017 looking to Spring

Our strawberry plant order has been placed.Spring is on the horizon! lol

5000 plants.3 varieties, AC Wendy,AC Valley Sunset, and a new one Laurel. The downside is we won't have any berries this year.

Laurel,a mid season berry.

Wendy, early berry that has become a favourite for us and a great first to ripen berry.

Valley Sunset, late season berry that our u-pickers really enjoy, great jam berry and for the freezer.

May 2016!!

Here it is May already! In the past year we have downsized quite a bit.We no longer sell eggs.We have 9 hens and they supply us quite well.
We have asparagus coming, this being the 4th year we expect it to be a great crop!

Pea order is here, just waiting for the right time to plant, super sugar snaps and alexandra are the varieties, alexandra being a shell pea.
Peach and plum trees are blooming and the honey bees are busy.
As for the strawberries.....not so good, maybe next year :)

January 2015

So this is 2015! Less Facebook and more blog!

In October I got another horse! Didn't plan to but that's how it turned out. She's a sweetheart and I can't imagine her not being here.We still have chickens about 100 but of course they are not all laying. This cold weather is hard on them.....one day they are out running around all over the place and the next day they are all cooped up! Spring is like 70 some days away.....yes,I am looking forward to Spring.Made some jelly in the fall and some beets and chow.We didn't have a good growing year here,no cucumbers! Other crops suffered as well, here's hoping 2015 will be a better year.

January 2014

WOW 6 months' since I put anything new on here! That's terrible! We had a great crop of berries, best ever! U-Pick was awesome this year,I even got to make some jam.
We had a really good crop of squash, sold it all and all of the pumpkins. We had lots of gourds but they didn't sell so well.....oh well the chickens and deer really enjoyed them.
We had a mink in the coop on Jan 1,not a great way to start the new year.Geof killed the mink but not before it got 8 hens :( Such an evil creature!
We are enjoying our home grown meat chickens, they are delicious!

The twins are 7 months old!! Just adorable grandbabies!!

What a winter!! A real winter......spring is 63 days away! I've had chicks on my mind....lol now that I know what the problem was with the incubator I won't hesitate one bit now.....fill er up! lol

June

Here it is,nearly the end of June and a soggy one at that. I must say it has been an exciting month for us;when grandchildren are born two at a time! Two healthy babies,Nathan and Janelle arrived on June 6th,both weighing over 6 lbs! So happy for our son and his wife......and big sister Danika!

We picked our first berries on the 14th of June!! We have a bumper crop! Just waiting now for this weather to break. The Valley Sunsets are just starting to ripen,so we should have berries for another few weeks :)

Early berry;Kent

Some of these were sold at the Berwick Market,Geof took the rest to Dartmouth.

May??

Brrrr!!! We've had a fire all week! Where's spring?! Geof has gone to the woods to finish up there, good day for it,cool and no flies.
We put in more strawberry plants last week,1000 Wendy and 1000 Valley sunset.Asparagus is up but we didn't cut any, better to let them and feed back to the roots.NEXT YEAR!!

Our grandson,he loves the chicks.
 Geof mowing,his new toy.
A couple I hatched in the incubator, aren't they different?
Found this Robins nest in the bunkhouse,so pretty.
 Strawberry blossoms :)
 Beans
Carrots, asparagus, and snap peas will come up on the net.

Count Down......

I'm actually excited about SPRING!I've been thinking about the strawberries for days! It's great to be optimistic for a change. It seems like Geof just covered them up and in a couple of months' the straw will be pulled back.We had some brutal temps earlier in the month and even with straw on the plants they can still get winter kill.Time to think about ordering some new strawberry boxes as we've almost used up our supply.
I was up on the hill yesterday checking out the fruit trees, they appear to have done well over the winter. Not many deer around which is good.We had a problem with leaf curl last year and hopefully that has been taken care of.
Plugged the incubator in and had it running for a couple hours......just wanted to check on the gauges and make sure it was working properly. It hasn't been used for a couple years and I really have the itch       right now but will wait for the weather to warm up!
Spring back in 11 day! Love daylight savings time:)
Geof has been cutting our winter wood this week,it's been perfect weather. We sure did burn a lot this winter and he thinks we may even run out.Hopefully a warm spring will help us out. The greenhouse held up well over the winter and it's beautiful out there today.
Chickens are doing well, still laying 55 to 60 eggs a day.We did lose a couple over the winter which isn't too bad.We are still enjoying our pork.....I will never go another winter without chicken though.........I figure we can at least grow some meat birds for ourselves.

Kali is shedding his winter coat a sure sign of Spring don't you think!

You can see just how far the sun has come around in just a few weeks.

Comfort Food

On these cold, dreary days I tend to cook.Geof is a big fan of homemade bread and after 30 + years I have it pretty well down.I don't measure which aggravates some family members because I don't have a measured recipe. It goes by feel and believe it or not the weather.I use my slow cooker a lot over the winter....thank you air miles:) So we had baked beans and home made bread last night. The night before I made myself some comfort food....cream peas on toast.....Geof doesn't like it! ha!!All the more for me!

Kali isn't comfort food but I eat him up every time I spend time with♥
